Colonel Albert Jennings Fountain was born in Staten Island, New York in 1838. His early military career led him to various parts of the country, including -- perhaps most significantly, New Mexico. Fountain served with the First Regiment of the New Mexico Volunteer Militia during New Mexico's Territorial period.
